Our clients approached us asking for a design that gave them a more open plan and sociable public area incorporating a large kitchen and island, a dining area and sitting room. Our challenge from the start was respecting the fact that the client’s dad was the original architect of the house and that we had to tread carefully ! Another challenge was the elevated position of the ground floor level, and with the client’s request for a link to the garden, we had to come up with a clever solution that ticked all of the boxes. Our approach was to design a cantilevered extension that appeared to float above the garden, also offering a raised balcony so that the internal areas could spill out into the open on warmer days. The internal areas were also entirely opened up to create a large T-shaped room providing a corner for each function of the room.
